Brentford defender Danny Foster says he would answer boss Andy Scott’s call if he was needed to plug a gap at left-back.
The 24-year-old right-back was an observer against Bristol Rovers as Scott kept faith with last weekend's back four, with centre back James Wilson deputising for injured full-back Ryan Dickson.
The Bees were well beaten 3-1 at Griffin Park - their worst home defeat since losing 3-0 to Hereford United in April, 2008 - thanks largely to a defensive display labelled poor by the manager.
Foster has already played on the opposite side this season - at Norwich City in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy - and made the odd appearance on the left flank for Dagenham & Redbridge last season.
It is a position Foster started out playing as a kid and he insists he doesn’t mind filling the void if needed - particularly given Dickson's continued absence with a troublesome knee injury.
“As a young boy, I played left back and played a few games there for the Daggers last year, so I don’t mind doing it,” he told the Ealing (Road) Comedies podcast last week.
“Obviously I’m naturally right footed and right-back is my position, but sometimes you’ve got to shift around, switch roles and go and do a job somewhere else.”
And the Essex-based defender remains up for the challenge of proving himself at a higher level.
“I’m not the sort of player who likes to get comfortable, I want to strive to get better in training and on the pitch,” he added.
“It is a long season. This is a better club, with better players in a better league. We’ve got a squad of very good players all fighting for a place.
“All I can do is train hard and give it my absolute best in every game I play.”
Meanwhile, 18-year-old centre back Fraser Franks has joined Blue Square South side Basingstoke Town on an initial one-month loan which could be extended to three.
