Sonny Cobbs headed a winner less than 30 minutes from the end to give Sutton victory at Tonbridge Angels on Saturday.

They had trailed at half-time, but Sam Gargan brought them level two minutes after the restart and Sutton were then rewarded for their late enterprise after manager Paul Doswell brought on James Hawes and Billy Dunn.

Doswell started with just Gargan up front and Angels were quickest out of the blocks with Carl Rook ballooning a shot way over.

Midfield enforcer Anthony Storey was lucky the referee didn't see a retaliatory slap after a hard tackle by Cobbs.

Then Sutton keeper Kevin Scriven got down well to keep out a low shot to his left.

Sutton nearly went ahead when Danny Phillips chased down the left and his cross was inches from finding Gargan in front of a gaping net.

Jason Goodliffe and Cobbs then had shots saved while Phillips' strike from outside the box was just wide.

So it was against the run of play that Angels took the lead - from a freak own goal.

Bradley Thomas tried to head a fairly innocuous bouncing ball back to Scriven but, although the keeper got a hand on the ball, he couldn’t keep it out of the net.

Two minutes into the second half Scriven came to the rescue after Rook found space on the right.

And shortly after Sutton were level.

Gargan was slid in down the inside-left channel and placed his low shot back across goals and into the bottom corner.

A minute later, Worgan tipped Cobbs' shot around the post.

Angels nearly went ahead with seven minutes left but Steve McKimm and Alan Bray threw themselves in the way, allowing Scriven to pounce on the ball.

Sutton dominated after their substitution with five minutes left and were rewarded with Cobbs' late, late goal.
