Brentford midfielder Marcus Bean is hoping his spell on the bench is over and is out to right the wrong’s of Saturday’s 3-1 defeat to Bristol Rovers.
The 24-year-old has made three substitute appearances in the league - to go with a full 90 minutes in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy defeat to Norwich City - and is tired of being a bit part player.
He was one of only a handful of players to emerge from the weekend’s horror show with any credit having come on minutes before half-time and helped spark a relative second-half revival.
And Bean, who struggled with a niggling hip injury during pre-season, is hoping his performance can trigger an upturn in his own fortunes and a prolonged spell in the starting line-up.
“I’ve been champing at the bit to be involved. It was great to get a long period on the pitch,” he said.
“You can do as much training and playing in the reserves as you like, but nothing beats playing for the first team, hopefully I can get a good run in the side now and kick on from there.
“It is frustrating watching from the sidelines, particularly when there were a few mistakes both individually and collectively.
“We got taught a bit of a lesson in that they had four chances and scored three of them. That is what you get when you step up a level and we have to adapt.
“We made chances ourselves, but you have to take them. If we had got a goal back earlier I think we could have gone on to win the game.”
Brentford travel to Yeovil Town on Saturday looking to avoid back-to-back league defeats and maintain the momentum of a solid start to the new League One campaign.
And Bean believes a win will help turn a good opening salvo in to a great one.
“We’ve shown in the past that we respond well to setbacks. The boys are still buzzing and eager to make up for the weekend’s result. Saturday can’t come fast enough,” he added.
“It is a shame we haven’t turned some of the draws we have had into wins. It has been a reasonable start, but we have to build on it.
“The next few games are very winnable and seven or nine points from the next three would make a reasonable start a great one.”
Brentford’s next three fixtures: Sept 26 Yeovil Town (a), 29 Southend (h), Oct 3 Swindon Town (h).
