Brentford’s defeat to Bristol Rovers may not last in the memory long, but one thing will for striker Charlie MacDonald.
The 28-year-old self-styled ‘fox in the box’ notched his first goal of the season and a rare one from outside the 18-yard box, to provide the only highlight in his side’s 3-1 humbling at the hands of the high-flying Pirates.
MacDonald, just back from shoulder surgery, lashed home a volley from 25-yards out to open his League One account and the former Southend man admitted he didn’t know too much about his long-range effort.
“I’m a box player. Anything that drops I try to get on it, but I won the header and it fell nicely. I caught it well and it went in,” he said.
And he has urged his team mates to the heed the lesson of Saturday’s missed opportunities.
“It was a bad first half performance. We had a few half chances, but the second half was a lot better,” he added.
“But we need to start better, this is League One, if we give people chances they will take them.”
