Brentford may not have yet hit the goalscoring heights of last season, but star striker Charlie MacDonald reckons that adds no further pressure to him on his return to the starting line-up.
MacDonald was the club’s leading hit man with 18 goals to help guide the Bees towards the League Two title, before injury meant he narrowly missed out break the 20-goal barrier.
New arrivals Steve Kabba and Carl Cort have so far struggled to break their Brentford ducks, while fellow summer signing Ben Strevens is still recovering from a broken leg sustained during pre-season.
Boss Andy Scott’s men have averaged exactly a goal-per-game in League One thus far compared to the 65 they bagged in 46 games last season, and MacDonald says he is on a one man mission to turn that around.
“Every forward prides himself on scoring goals and I’m no different. I wanted to get back fit and back in the team as soon as possible to help maintain Brentford’s start,” he said.
“I want to score as many goals as I can and that hasn’t changed. I suppose Carl and Kabbs are the same. Luckily for me I got on the scoresheet in my second start, which is only good for confidence - especially going in to the next few games.”
And if it is a ‘fox in the box’ Scott needs, MacDonald says he is the man.
“‘Worldy’ goals like the one I scored against Bristol are hard to come by. I tend to do my work inside the box. That is what I get paid to do. I make sure I get in there and put the chances away,” he added.
