Yeovil Town 2 Brentford 0
Brentford endured a miserable visit to Somerset when they crashed to a 2-0 defeat to Yeovil Town at Huish Park on Saturday.
The Bees turned in one of their worst performances of the season as they failed to exert any control in midfield and struggled to create any chances up front.
The lack of creativity was so stark that the Bees notched a solitary chance during a barren first half.
Boss Andy Scott was disappointed with his side’s performance: “We didn’t have a good start and weren’t playing at the tempo I expect my sides to play.
"We had it in spells in the second half and kept the pressure on them and had a few chances but we weren’t good enough all over the pitch.
“They have been told in no uncertain terms that it is going to be a long hard season if we continue to approach games in that manner.”
Scott made three changes, most notably handing Nikki Bull his Brentford league debut in goal ahead of Lewis Price.
As many expected, Marcus Bean replaced David Hunt in midfield while Sam Saunders started ahead of Myles Weston.
There were very few chances in the opening quarter of an hour as both sides struggled to get going. Eventually the Glovers began to exert some control as they enjoyed the greater share of possession.
Former Bee Sam Williams wasted a good chance when he shot wide of the left hand post after an Andrew Welsh corner on the right went right across goal.
Then an intelligent chip from Ryan Mason set Walsh racing through the heart of the Bees defence and into the box, where Bull made a good smothering save when he dived at Walsh’s feet.
Continuing to look the most likely to score, Yeovil took the lead midway through the first half when Craig Alcock met Welsh’s corner from the left at the near post with a bullet header that gave Bull little chance.
Brentford’s only chance of the first half came when Steve Kabba won a free-kick 25 yards from goal in the centre, but Saunders' free-kick around the wall was blocked in the box.
Scott made an immediate change at half time, with Weston replacing Kabba.
Yet it was Yeovil on the front foot when Bull was forced to make a good close-range save from Williams.
The Glovers doubled their lead only six minutes into the half.
Former Bee Gavin Tomlin was at the heart of it with a low pass through the Bees defence into the middle of the box, which Welsh raced onto and hit a first time shot past Bull into the empty net.
As Brentford looked for a way back into the game, referee Roger East waved away claims for a penalty when Kevin O’Connor was challenged in the box.
The ball was cleared to James Wilson, whose quick ball forward allowed Charlie MacDonald to turn and shoot wide of the right hand post.
The Bees eventually came to life midway through the half and a cross from Cleveland Taylor wide on the right fell to Sam Wood, whose volley cannoned back off the post.
A minute later Bean broke forward from midfield but saw his shot comfortably held by Alex McCarthy.
Despite the result, Scott sees no reason to panic just yet: “This is only a blip, but it’s only a blip if we come out the other side quickly.
"But I have complete faith in my players and won’t be ringing any alarm bells yet.”
