Brentford winger Myles Weston reckons if he can pinch a leaf or two from Barcelona’s Thierry Henry he won’t go too far wrong as a striker.
The 21-year-old former Notts County man put in an impressive shift in Tuesday’s 2-1 win over Southend to help the Bees end a seven match winless run in dramatic fashion.
Skipper Kevin O’Connor netted twice from the spot in the last 20 minutes - the second deep into injury time at the end of the game - to bring boss Andy Scott’s men back from the brink of defeat.
Weston, who was hauled down in the box for O’Connor’s first strike, was deployed up front alongside Charlie MacDonald in the continued absence of Carl Cort and Ben Strevens.
Scott insists it is likely the youngster will return to the flanks when he has a full compliment of frontmen at his disposal and will be a better payer for it.
But the ex-Charlton Athletic trainee has not ruled out emulating the man he watches most on television when it comes to learning his craft.
“Every day I’m learning something new. All the strikers at the club have been really helpful with giving me tips on my game,” he said.
“I’m always doing extra shooting practise but I think my hold up play needs the most work at the minute. I’ve never played the position before really so I’m having to work on it as I go.
“I’ve been watching games at the weekend to see what the best strikers in the world do.
“I probably watch Thierry Henry the most. He was a winger who transfered to a striker. Maybe in couple of years I could do the same, who knows.
“The most I’ve scored in a season before is four. I’m half way there. If I can get better maybe I’ll beat that, but I’m making no commitments.”
And his manager is happy enough with Weston’s form not to call for re-enforcements to his front line just yet.
“I don’t want to bring in players who aren’t as good as those we have already. Every game Myles plays he learns and it gives him an understanding of what a striker needs from a winger,” said Scott.
“I’ve assembled a squad that can cover every position. Myles will return to the wing, but he has given himself every opportunity to get better because his work rate and attitude has been outstanding.”
