Brentford’s back-four have acknowledged strikers Carl Cort and Charlie MacDonald could be forgiven for being frustrated after seeing their efforts go to waste at the weekend.
Former Newcastle United front man Cort delivered his best performance in a Bees shirt since signing in the summer and notched his first goal for the club in the process, as the front two twice dragged their team back in to contention.
MacDonald, who missed a relatively simple chance early in the second half, set up a frantic finale with a stooping header late on, but boss Andy Scott’s men couldn’t force a stalemate.
And defender Alan Bennett admits the side’s defensive lapses must have made frustrating viewing for everyone, including those at the other end of the pitch.
“When Carl plays he adds an extra dimension to our game. His hold up play was excellent and there seems to be some understanding emerging between him and Charlie,” he said.
“Carl was head and shoulders above the rest of us. We all know what he can do and his finishing is a big part of that. It is a shame we couldn’t get something more out of it.
“It must get really frustrating for everyone watching when we give things away like that.”
And the 28-year-old centre back has vowed to put things right at Hartlepool United tomorrow.
“You are only as good as your last game, so we have to turn that around again like we did against Southend,” he added.
“We have moved on from the weekend. You can’t dwell on things too long otherwise it tears the team apart.
“We need to find our consistency again and we are entirely focused on that.”
Brentford’s next three games: Oct 9 Hartlepool United (a), 17 Leyton Orient (a), 24 Stockport County (h).
