Defender Alan Bennett has revealed boss Andy Scott’s double barrelled blast at the Brentford defence wrecked his birthday celebrations and left the training ground in a sombre mood this week.
The Griffin Park skipper turned 28 on Sunday hours after Swindon Town striker Alex Revell’s double condemned the Bees to a third defeat in four games on Saturday, despite goals from Carl Cort and Charlie MacDonald.
It is the fourth time Scott’s men have found themselves trailing at half-time, despite the manager repeatedly urging his side to start games on the front foot.
Bennett insists there was a lot of soul searching in Osterley on Monday as the boss made his squad sit through a video of Saturday’s defensive howlers.
And the Irishman reckons the side need to take that attention to detail onto the field to eradicate the lapses that have seen the club’s promising start to the campaign stall in recent weeks.
“It was personally very frustrating to have got back in the game and then to gift them a third. It was my birthday on the Sunday and it felt more like a funeral to be honest,” he said.
“It is one thing making a mistake but to do the same thing again moments later is not acceptable. We are giving side’s two goals starts.
“We have looked at a couple of technical things on the video, which I have to say was pretty sobering, but it is the little bricks that build the wall I suppose.
“We’ve played 12 games now. The first six we couldn’t score but were solid at the back. Now it seems the other way around and it is difficult.”
The Bees have so far made light of the step up in class they have experienced since arriving in League One, having already secured ?? points.
But Bennett reckons the last three weeks have only served to remind the side that their mistakes are going to be more heavily punished than they otherwise would have done in League Two.
“The step up in standard has made a difference. While we have competed and played well at times we are getting penalised for our mistakes,” he added.
“We might have got away with it last year, but we aren’t now and we have to wake up to that fact pretty quickly.”
