Harlequins hooker Tani Fuga reckons centre George Lowe’s brace against Gloucester was not unexpected and has given head coach John Kingston a real selection headache.
The 20-year-old academy star crossed twice - his first senior tries for the club - as Quins recorded an impressive 35-29 triumph over the Cherry and Whites.
The England U20 international had been down to spend the season on loan at National League One Esher, but a string of injuries, suspensions and international has seen make him make 12 appearances in the first XV - including seven starts.
And Fuga reckons his try scoring exploits at the weekend came as no surprise.
“We saw glimpses of what George was like earleir in the season and in his time with academy,” he said.
“He is a fantastic player with a good rugby brain, and is immensely quick.
“He has been behind Jordan Turner-Hall and a few others, but injuries have given him his chance and he has taken it.
“A few of the boys have come back since the start of the season, but it is his jersey at the moment and it is up to the others to take it off him.”
Tries from returning number eight Nick Easter and fly-half Nick Evans - a fine individual effort - put the gloss on a performance that merited a more comprehensive victory, according to Kingston.
Quins travel to Leeds Carnegie tonight and Fuga admits it is time to back up Saturday’s confidence boosting win with a convincing showing on the road.
“It was a good win and nice to score some tries, but we have got to back it up with five points at Leeds this week,” he added.
“It has been a slow start for us, but we are beginning to get back to our old selves and another win would be a good step forward.”
But Fuga has also warned team mates they must be wary of former Quins number nine Andy Gomarsall’s influence at Headingley.
“Andy was a legend at Quins. Every time he played against his old team’s with us we always seemed to win and he would have a massive game,” he said.
“He will no doubt be looking to run it as much as possible and will be barking at his team to get stuck in. We have to match that.”
Quins’ next three games: Dec 4 Leeds Carnegie (a), 13 Sale Sharks (HCup, h), 20 Sale Sharks (HCup, a).
