Brentford striker Charlie MacDonald has admitted he would rather let his goals do the talking when it comes to landing a new contract at Griffin Park.
The 28-year-old took his season’s tally to six with the winner against Colchester United last week, but was frustrated at being on the wrong end of a 1-0 scoreline at Tranmere Rovers on Saturday
MacDonald, who’s ocntract expires this summer, arrived at the club in 2008 from Southend United and fired 16 league goals as the Bees lifted the League Two title in some style.
And with boss Andy Scott’s threats of wholesale changes in January ringing in everyone’s ears, he is hoping a similar return this time around can land an extended stay in west London.
“I don’t really like to talk about it. I’m in the last year of my contract and if something happens for me here then great, if not then I’ll have to elsewhere,” MacDonald told the Ealing Road Comedies podcast last week.
“I just want to concentrate on playing well for Brentford and doing my best for the club. The contract will sort itself out.
“As a forward, clubs - including Brentford - like players that score goals. I’m quite happy with my scoring ratio at the club over the last season and a half.
“Hopefully, that will continue and I’ll just keep doing what Andy brought me to the club for and that is score goals.
“We’ll assess the situation if and when it comes up, but until then I’ll keep playing and hopefully score plenty more goals in the new year.”
MacDonald sat the start of the season out as he battled to comeback from shoulder surgery, but believes he is approaching the sort of form that made him top scorer last season.
And he puts that partly down to finally linking up with broken leg victim Ben Strevens up front.
“I love playing with Strevs. He is a very intelligent footballer and works really hard as well,” he added.
“We are the pairing Andy had hoped to use this season, but injuries have meant others had to be brought in. Some have worked, some haven’t.
“Strevs is not just a big target man. Yes, he wins flick ons and headers, but he has got a decent touch as well.
“My form has started to get better from the Millwall game and that was the first game we played together.
“Since then I’ve played not too bad and have been quite sharp. That has been partly down to playing with him.”
