Brentford 1 (Weston 75) Wycombe Wanderers 1
Myles Weston helped Brentford come from behind to grab a point in a dour draw with Wycombe Wanderers at Griffin Park on Saturday.
After such an impressive showing against Gillingham the previous week, many expected Brentford to get the better of another side promoted alongside them last season.
While the poor playing surface was a hindrance, the side turned in a disappointingly lethargic performance.
Afterwards, Bees boss Andy Scott acknowledged his side experienced a dip: “I said last week about how good the crowd were in getting behind us, but they would have to appreciate that we would have dips in form and one came today.
"But pleased with a point after the way we played.”
After seeing his side put four past Gillingham, Scott put out an unchanged side.
The afternoon may have been different had Weston taken advantage of an early chance, but he fired just wide of the post.
Wycombe enjoyed more of the possession in the early stages, with Alex Revell and Kevin McLeod looking particularly lively.
Revell came close on a couple of occasions, before McLeod helped create the opener nearly half-an-hour in.
After picking up the ball on the left, he crossed to the back post, where it was swept home from 10 yards out by Kevin Betsy.
Wycombe almost doubled their lead shortly after, when the ball was chipped into the Bees box and Wojciech Szczesny came out to punch the ball clear at full stretch and just ahead of the advancing Betsy.
Brentford’s best chance of the half came when John Akinde jinked down the left before crossing to Ryan Dickson just inside the box.
Yet, after taking a touch to beat the defender, Dickson blazed his shot over the bar.
The second half offered little more promise, with Brentford doing their best to gift the visitors another goal early in the half.
After a comedy of errors as the Bees failed to clear the ball from their box, Dickson struggled to control Szczesny’s pass and he allowed Betsy to nip into the box but he shot wide of the right-hand post.
Brentford got back on level terms after Kevin O’Connor’s header in midfield released Charlie MacDonald, who played the ball square for Weston to slot the ball into the bottom right hand corner.
Brentford again suffered a mix-up at the back, when Szczesny and Tommy Smith failed to clear the ball and Revell’s goal-bound shot was cleared by Sam Wood.
During the final 10 minutes, Brentford began to control the game, but despite MacDonald continuing to chase everything up front, and some neat touches from substitute Carl Cort, they were unable to find a winner.
