Cheam Hockey Club’s men stretched their winning run in Surrey Division Three to nine by beating Walton & Weybridge II 2-1 in an ill-tempered match.
Cheam took the lead in the 15th minute when Faraz Shibli swept Andy Ventris’s blocked strike into the top corner.
It then took some tremendous last-ditch defending from Ed Pullen and John Kingston to keep the visitors out until they equalised just before half-time from a short corner.
Cheam managed to regain the initative in the second half and restored their lead when Richard Eggleton pounced on a well-worked short corner to score.
Ventris and Dominic Beales then forced excellent saves out of the Walton keeper, while the possibility of a late equaliser was extinguished by great work from Cheam’s patched-up defence.
Cheam are now five points clear of nearest rivals Edinburgh University, who they face on Saturday.
