Brenford boss Andy Scott has warned his men are far from safe from the League One drop zone and their biggest threat to survival is complacency.
The Bees failed to take full advantage of a dominant first-half display at Walsall on Saturday as they were made to pay as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat in the Midlands.
It means Scott’s men are just seven points clear of the relegation zone - despite being 12th in the table - and could still easily be sucked into a scrap at the wrong end of the table.
The Griffin Park chief, who has set his team a minimum points target of 52, was angered by his side’s second-half performance at the weekend and their failure to capitalise on the chances he felt they had to win the game.
And the former Bees striker has told his squad they cannot take their foot off the gas having already recovered from a flirtation with the bottom-four earlier in the season.
“Everyone in the top eight or nine teams are away from everybody else,” he said.
“Teams from about 11th down are all very close. It is a tight league in terms of points and things can change very quickly if you get on a good or bad run.
“There are a lot of games still to be played, which because of cancellations are going to come thick and fast.
“I would think any team in the bottom four will believe they can get out of trouble if they can get on a good run. Conversely, anyone can get sucked into a relegation battle.”
Brentford started the second-half slowly at the weekend having squandered opportunities to extend the 1-0 advantage given to them by Charlie MacDonald.
And Scott doesn’t want the same thing to cost his side during the end of season run in.
“We looked comfortable against a side with Championship experience and a coach who has been involved at a very high level,” he added.
“You have to start games well and we did. You have to start the second half in the same way, and as a team we took our foot off the gas.
“We must take advantage of our dominance otherwise it can come back and bite you.”
