Brentford boss Andy Scott insists former skipper Alan Bennett’s exile at Wycombe Wanderers will end - but not before Ipswich Town loan star Tommy Smith returns to Portman Road.
Bennett’s loan spell at Adams Park ends on Monday, but the Bees chief is expecting to extend the deal for another month with a 24-hour re-call clause.
New Zealand World Cup hopeful Smith, 20, made the dash back from making his international debut against Mexico in California to feature in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Elland Road, and is now expected to complete a full 93-day term at Griffin Park at the beginning of April.
It means Bennett will be back at Griffin Park for the run-in and Scott believes it the loan transfer merry-go-round will play nicely into his side’s hands.
“We would love to have kept Tommy for the rest of the season, but at least we are going to get a full three months and plenty of games out of him,” he said.
“Alan has done reasonably well at Wycombe and helped them keep three cleansheets. They are keen to keep him, so it makes sense for him to stay there.
“He has been frustrated by the lack of regular football here and it is important he keeps match fit so he can play his part when Tommy returns.”
