Despite taking a two-goal lead early in the game, Brentford eventually had to settle for a 3-3 draw with Colchester United at the Weston Homes Community Stadium on Tuesday night.

Two goals in quick succession from David Hunt and Leon Legge gave the Bees a great start, but after Colchester haul themselves back in the game and drew level on the stroke of half time, the Bees did well to take a draw at the end of the second half.

Scott was satisfied with the outcome: “I’m proud of the boys and they way they worked. We’ve taken four points off Colchester and they are in the hunt [for promotion]. That shows the commitment of the boys and their determination to go and get the points.”

Scott made two changes to the side that won at Stockport, with Hunt and Marcus Bean coming into midfield, with captain Kevin O’Connor replacing Danny Foster at right back and Sam Wood slotting in at left back in place of the injured Ryan Dickson.

Brentford took the lead after nearly a quarter of an hour when O’Connor’s free kick from the right was half cleared to Hunt on the edge of the box and his low shot took a deflection on its way into the corner of the net.

The Bees doubled their lead shortly after when Hunt’s corner from the right was majestically headed home by the unchallenged Legge.

Colchester had a decent chance when a cross from the right fell to Anthony Wordsworth six yards out, but before he had time to shoot Wojciech Szczesny did well to smother the ball at his feet.

Colchester pulled one back after Ian Henderson made space on the right and his cross into the middle of the box was deflected by the off balance Hunt over Szczesny into the top left hand corner.

A quick break down the left by the Bees saw Myles Weston pick out Bean on the edge of the box and after taking a touch to create space, he curled in a shot that was held by the diving Ben Williams.

Wordsworth levelled things up on the stroke of half time after Brentford failed to clear a couple of corners and he stabbed the ball home from close range from a corner from the left.

Early in the second half Szczesny pulled off a superb save when he dived low to his right to get his hands on the ball after Phil Ifil had crossed from the right hand side.

Brentford continued to live dangerously after giving the impressive Kevin Lisbie two chances to shoot, with the second cannoning off Wood.

The Bees re-took the lead with what could be their goal of the season after Charlie MacDonald did well to hold the ball up on the left, before back-heeling it into the path of Toumani Diagouraga, who danced through Colchester’s defence before playing a reverse pass back to MacDonald on the edge of the six yard box, from where he coolly slotted it past Williams at the near post.

It was all square again after a marauding run down the right by Lisbie, which saw him get the better of Wood before firing in a cross that was turned in by David Prutton from close range.

Despite sustained United pressure in the closing minutes Brentford held on for a point, with Legge getting his head to several corners to deny Colchester an equaliser.
