Histon 1-3 AFC Wimbledon
Wimbledon kept their play-off flame flickering with a win against Histon.
Manager Terry Brown says his team are still capable of reaching the top five despite being seven points off the pace.
Wimbledon host title-chasing Stevenage on Bank Holiday Monday – and then travel to York City, currently occupying the final play-off place, on Wednesday night.
Goals this afternoon from Glenn Poole, Sam Hatton and Danny Kedwell kept the Dons in the hunt.
Boss Brown said: “It certainly keeps us in the mix. We have to get something against Stevenage on Monday and then we go to York, the only side we can catch in the top five.
“If we beat them up there, suddenly there’s only a few points in it. It’s interesting again.
“If we didn’t win here, that would probably have been that. But we’ve won and we’re back to squeaky backside time!
“We’re not under any pressure at all. And perhaps that could well work in our favour.
“Credit to Histon, who are a very young side. They put us under big pressure after we went 3-0 up and made us work our socks off. But it’s a good three points that keeps hopes alive.
“Monday should be a full house and a great atmosphere. But we need to get something from the game.”
Wimbledon today won it in four first half minutes. Just after the half hour mark, Poole’s shot went in off the crossbar after Kedwell’s run down the left.
It was 2-0 soon later, Kedwell picking out Hatton who was left unattended to find the bottom corner.
When Kedwell made the most of poor handling from David Knight to make it 3-0, it was game over. But Brett Johnson’s own goal gave Histon hope 20 seconds after.
They went for it in the last half an hour but Wimbledon held firm to collect their first away win since their visit to Luton in February.
Alan Lewer, the Histon manager, said: “It felt at times today like we were up against twelve men. The referee had a very poor game.
“I felt second half we gave it a good go without really hurting Wimbledon. We still need three points to make sure we’re in this league next season.”
