Brentford midfielder Sam Saunders reckons his Griffin Park future hangs on end of season talks with boss Andy Scott.

The 26-year-old bagged his first goal of the season with a sublime free-kick in Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Yeovil Town, sparking exuberant celebrations from the former Dagenham & Redbridge man.

Saunders has two seasons left on the three-year deal he signed last summer, having banged in 14 goals for the Daggers in League Two last year - including two against the Bees.

He has failed to scale the heights of last season at his new club as he has endured a stop-start campaign since starting the opening eight games under Scott.

The manager has two days of back-to-back meetings with playing staff following the final day clash with Hartlepool United on May 8, as he plans for next season.

And Saunders admits he will be one of those who will be listening with interest to what the boss has to say,” he said.

“It feels like I’ve been sat on the sidelines for large parts of the season, so it was nice to score and the celebration was mainly letting off a bit of frustration.

“I’d love to have got a goal earlier in the season. Maybe things would have been different for me this season.

“Last year confidence was high because I was scoring and I knew I would be starting week in, week out.

“There have been games where I have done well and games where I haven’t and at 26-years-old I’m still learning.

“We’ll all be speaking with the gaffer at the end of the season to get some feedback and I’m no different. I know I can play at this level and as long as the gaffer says I’m part of his plans then I will be giving it 100 per cent.

“I’m hungry for the start of next season already. A lot of the boys here are out on their feet, but I feel pretty fresh and can’t wait.

“I know injuries and illness probably gave me my chance at the weekend, but hopefully the goal will mean I get another chance this week and I can finish the season on a high.”

And Scott agreed he was hoping there was still more to come from the former Carshalton Athletic wingman.

“He has waited his time and has found it difficult to settle in and play the way we want to play, but he has got ability and that is why we signed him,” he added.

“It was a good free kick and nice to come at the end of the season, hopefully there are a couple more in there.”
