Boss Paul Doswell insists there is still room for improvement despite watching Sutton United secure their sixth straight league win.
Doswell’s men bounced back from their shock FA Cup exit at the hands of Alton Town to beat Harrow Borough 2-1 on Tuesday thanks to wonder strikes from Richard Jolly and Bradley Woods-Garness.
United sit top of the Ryman League Premier Division having made an unbeaten start to the campaign, but the Gander Green Lane chief expects more.
“Of course I’m happy with six wins on the spin, but this is a new side and I don' think you’ve seen the best of us yet,” he said.
“We did well at Hastings and Tooting and against Horsham, but to an extent the other results have papered over some cracks.
“I'm not being critical, I just expect better from a very good group of players.
“We are not the finished article by any stretch. We’ve made an excellent start, but that is all and we need to push on.”
Doswell added Carshalton Athletic’s former Shrewsbury Town midfielder Karl Murray to his squad on Tuesday to beef up his squad in light of recent injuries.
Sutton have a nine day break before hosting Margate, which should see defender Simon Downer recover from his hamstring injury although striker Craig Dundas (ankle) is some way off a return.
There are concerns over Jason Goodliffe (ankle), Steve Watts (knee) and Fola Orilonishe (calf), but Doswell thinks his new man will help plug the gaps - despite the good news being tempered by Rob Watkins’ retirement.
“We’re fighting fires at the moment. At times we’ve struggled to get a team out and have cancelled training this week because no-one is fit,” he added.
“Karl is a good signing because he can play several positions and we have picked up Darren Ebsworth to come in at left back.
“The good news - if you can call it that - is Alan Bray doesn’t need an operation on his knee and could return in January, when I thought he would be out for the season.”
Sutton’s next three games: Oct 2 Margate (h), Oct 4 Kingstonian (a), 9 Lowestoft Town (a).
