Brentford manager Andy Scott has conceded goalkeeper Richard Lee’s shoot-out heroics have not guaranteed him a League One starting slot.
Lee saved Jermaine Beckford’s spot-kick and watched Phil Jagielka hit a post from 12-yards as the Bees dumped Premier League Everton out of the Carling Cup on Tuesday.
The former Watford man produced a string of fine saves to ensure the scores were level at 1-1 after extra-time - setting up a historic win in front of 8,960 fans at Griffin Park.
He only started the game because on-loan keeper Ben Hamer is cup-tied and Scott admits the Reading shotstopper - who has kept three cleansheet since switching to west London - is not guaranteed to return.
“Richard is a number one goalkeeper and so is Ben Hamer. If you are going to do well throughout a long season you need a big squad of players that are all capable of playing,” he said.
“I’ve always known he is a good goalkeeper and he is beginning to find his feet.
“He has been first-class in training , his attitude is spot on and he is a top, top lad. He has given me a selection problem, but then I ask that of all my players.”
Lee, who made a horror start at Brentford in a 4-0 pre-season defeat to Fulham, has only played three competitive games for his new club but has now played a part in two shocks.
The Bees beat Championship side Hull City 2-1 in the previous round and Lee is hoping his heroics can give him a nudge in the right direction.
“The manager knows my thoughts in that I didn’t come here to be a number two, as much as he’d love to have us both here I’m sure,” he added.
“I didn’t get off to the best start against Fulham, but hopefully I’ve proved what I’m about in the last three cup games.
“Ben has done fantastically well as well and now he has got a very tough decision to make.
“But I’ve got one more cup game guaranteed, so Andy won’t get a knock on his door for a little while yet.”
