Brentford keeper Richard Lee says his shoot-out heroics came as no surprise to him at Griffin Park on Tuesday night.
The 27-year-old saved Jermaine Beckford’s spot-kick and watched Phil Jagielka hit a post to set up a famous Carling Cup win over Premier League Everton after extra-time had ended with the scores locked at 1-1.
Myles Weston, Nicky Forster, Michael Spillane and Charlie MacDonald found the net to send the Bees through.
And Lee, who also made a string of fine second-half saves, felt it was never in doubt.
“I fancied my chances as I’ve saved my last four penalties in League games prior to this, so I’ve got a decent record,” he said.
“It was almost fate that it would be Jermaine Beckford. I had a feeling it would be him, so I was delighted to get a hand down to it.
“The boys took fantastic penalties, so calm and didn’t give their keeper a chance.
“It was an incredible night, we played fantastically well and obviously from a personal point of view I’ve had an opportunity to make a few saves. It was a good feeling.”
Boss Andy Scott added: “I said to him before the shoot-out you’ve been absolutely outstanding so far, now go and finish it off.
“He did exactly that and deserves all the plaudits he’ll get.”
