Bees skipper Kevin O’Connor says Tuesday’s Carling Cup shock more than makes up for missing Brentford’s last major cup giant-killing.

The 28-year-old midfielder was a frustrated spectator when his side knocked Premier League Sunderland out of the FA Cup 2-1 at Griffin Park in 2006.

O’Connor, who was suspended that day, was substituted with cramp late on in the penalty shoot-out triumph over Everton, but was glad he managed lap up the moment with fans on the pitch.

“I was in the stands for the Sunderland game and although I got on the pitch afterwards, this time was totally different,” he told the Ealing Road Comedies podcast.

“It was a brilliant experience and when you look at their team sheet and see the names played it makes it even more special.

“It was a case of hanging in there and showing a bit of character. We got a bit of confidence and we went on from there.

“It was a brilliant night and to cap it by winning on penalties - you couldn’t really have asked for more.

“The pitch invasion was crazy and just shows how much it means to the fans. It was an amazing night.”

But O’Connor has reminded his team-mates the win counts for nothing unless they repeat that performance in League One.

“Winning breeds confidence and although we won on penalties, it is a result that could act as a real springboard for us,” he added.

“We need to take this into the League and keep the feel good factor going for as long as we can.”
