Dons assistant Stuart Cash reckons the form of defenders Fraser Franks and Ed Harris has given boss Terry Brown a major selection headache.

Franks’ brace set AFC Wimbledon on their way to a 3-0 victory over Cambridge United on Wednesday as they bounced back in style from Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at Kidderminster Harriers.

The 19-year-old pair have deputised in the absence of Brett Johnson and Ismail Yakubu and particularly impressed in last week’s win over Crawley Town.

Yakubu got through 45 minutes against United and Johnson is close to a comeback, but Cash admits their return to the starting line-up is not a foregone conclusion.

“We told the players that you can’t rely on Danny Kedwell scoring week in, week out, although his record suggests he can,” he said.

“We have to contribute from wide areas, central midfield and our central defenders have to make their presence felt at set plays.

“Fraser made a big impact when he came on and Ed was excellent, so I was pleased for both of them.

“They are only going to get better with experience. They started the season as understudies, but have really forced themselves to the front of the queue.

“It is going to be a hard decision not to select them when Brett and Yaks are fully fit.”

Dons have targeted six points from this week’s home clashes with Cambridge and Forest Green Rovers and Franks’ double coupled with a Christian Jolley strike sees them half way there.

But Cash is wary his men need to start repeating the trick away from home with trips to Mansfield Town and Wrexham on the horizon.

“Before Wednesday we had scored 13 goals in five home games and conceded just three,” he added.

“That is pretty impressive and we very much want to keep that going by being really strong at home.

“We’ve got two really tough away games next week. Mansfield have been flying and Wrexham have got some decent results at home.

“If we can pick up three points at the weekend we can approach those games with confidence and given them a go.”
