Striker Danny Kedwell reckons he is destined to win the golden boot this year and fire the Dons to the Blue Square Premier title.
The 27-year-old’s winner against Crawley Town put him joint top of the league’s goalscoring charts with Fleetwood Town’s Magno Vieira ahead of the mid-week programme.
He finished third in the race to be last season’s Blue Square hotshot with 21-league strikes as he finished leading scorer for AFC Wimbledon with 26 in all competitions.
And he believes the quality in the Kingsmeadow squad this season will see him go the distance this time around.
“Everyone is out to get the golden boot, but this year I feel like it is my year. I’m out to get it and I think I will,” he said.
“We’ve got better quality in the squad this season. I finished third last year and better players around I think I will only score more.
“I’ve started better than I could have imagined - I think there are only three games where I haven’t scored - it is great to score the winning goals, you just can’t beat that feeling.
“As a striker you want to score goals. I know I will have a dry patch, but hopefully I can keep banging them in week in, week out like I have been, for as long as possible.”
The Dons came up short as they crashed 2-0 at Kidderminster Harriers and Kedwell thinks the weight of expectation may have played its part.
“When you are top of the league everyone expects you to win. It adds pressure. Being third or fourth suits us,” he added.
“When we haven’t been top we have won, so I think that tells a story. We have bounced back after every defeat and I expect us to keep doing that.
“I only see six points against Forest. It is the sort of game we have to win to win the league. I think we can get back to winning ways and get back on top where we belong.”
Dons boss Terry Brown received a boost week when scans showed midfielder Lee Minshull will only be missing for upto two months rather than the rest of the season - as Brown had first feared.
Severe medial ligament damage means he is likely to be missing until November, but Kedwell is confident the squad can cope.
“It is hard because we haven’t got the biggest squad. The youngsters that have come in have done brilliantly though,” he said.
“We are getting back somewhere near full strength and once that happens I think we will become more consistent.”
AFC Wimbledon’s next four games: Sept 29 Cambridge United (h), Oct 2 Forest Green Rovers (h), 5 Mansfield Town (a), 9 Wrexham (a).
