This week the Extra Time spotlight falls on Harlequins fly-half Nick Evans.
If you hadn’t been a rugby player what would you have been?: I’m a physiotherapist by trade so it probably would have been that, but if I could do absolutely anything else it would fishing.
I love it. I’ve fished all around the coast in the New Zealand - where the fish are amazing - and a few estates and places on the coast in England, it is very relaxing. But the best place to fish is back home.
What is your biggest catch?: I once caught a Striped Marlin that weighed 140kg. It took me 45 minutes to land, so it was a good job I’m pretty fit.
Being a clean living athlete, you must like eating fish then?: Back home the variety of fresh fish available is something else compared to here. I do like eating out, but is more the Asian fusion stuff in the UK that is my thing.
So when you’re not eating, playing rugby or fishing, what else do you get up to?: I like to play a bit of guitar. The boys like a sing song on the coach to away games so I try to learn a few of the more popular tunes and belt them out. Its good fun.
And a few beers?: All the boys meet up once a month for night out. It is not all work and no play. It is important for team spirit.
Anyone have questionable taste in music?: Nick Easter. His taste is pretty dreadful and the worst thing is that some have actually made it into the dressing room. Annoying.
So what’s on your iPod then?: Got a bit of Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon, Guns n Roses, Credence and unusually I’m quite into Doctor Hook at the moment. You’ve got to love a bit of easy listening. You’ll be surprised how many of his songs you’ll know.
And the last thing you Sky+:?
I like the fishing programmes like Robson Green’s Extreme Fishing, but that said...the last thing I recorded was the X Factor. It is a bit embarrassing to admit that. I think that Matt Cardle - the guy with the hat and the beard - is probably the best.
