Worcester Park collected the necessary point for the league title in emphatic style on Tuesday night, thrashing Cobham 4-1 at Leg of Mutton Field, Cobham.
Reaching their first Combined Counties league championship, Park opened the scoring in the 25th minute when captain Gary Knowelden’s left foot cross was bundled in at the far post by top goalscorer James Dunning.
In the final two minutes before half-time Park all but sealed the title with 2 goals in a minute.
Gary Knowelden’s in-swinging corner was expertly headed in by man of the match Joe Cheeseman and a minute later on the stroke of half-time a speculative Steve Marples long shot from just outside the area squirmed under the body of the diving Cobham keeper to make it 3-0.
The second half was less one sided but mostly down to Park losing centre back Darren Beale to a straight red card on 74 minutes as he was adjudged to have been the last man in bringing down the Cobham forward.
The penalty was duly dispatched. However by that that stage Cobham were already 4-0 down as Cheeseman collected his second goal of the game from a Dan Dunning long throw which bounced high in the penalty area on the very hard dusty pitch.
Park could even afford to miss a penalty of their own after Gary Knowelden was pulled down inside the area. Ever present 17 year old full back Dec Teuten was given the chance to score his first goal of the season with regular taker Beale off the pitch but his well aimed penalty was at a good height for the keeper who made a fine save.
