Harlequins starlet Miles Mantella says they have laid down a considerable marker to their rivals after dominating the opening round of the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Premiership Rugby 7s Series at the Rec.
Quins booked their place at the final on the August 5 after an emphatic three wins at the Rec on Friday scoring 15 tries scored to just three conceded.
Hosts Bath also squeezed into the final at the expense of South West rivals Exeter but 19-year-old Mantella says Quins don’t care who joins them at the Stoop in three weeks’ time.
He said: “We know we have got talent, we just wanted to go out there and show it. We have had a couple of sessions before this but it seemed just to click as a team.
“Obviously we wanted to go out and give it our all and our goal was always not to lose a game. We wanted to put a marker down so other teams can see how good we are..
“We have got a very strong squad but there are a lot of other very competitive teams in the countries and it will depend how strong a team they put out.
“But this has given a lot of confidence and I think we have got a very good chance.”
Quins had the strongest team on paper in Bath and the lived up to that billing thanks to the presence of sevens specialists Mantella and Ollie Lindsay-Hague.
However the star performers on the night were back-three fliers Ross Chisholm and Charlie Walker who finished with four and three tries respectively to give the watching Conor O’Shea plenty of food for thought.
O’Shea already has one vacancy to fill on the wing since Gonzalo Camacho’s departure and potentially a second one if Ugo Monye is involved in the World Cup while scrum-half Mantella could take advantage of Danny Care’s absence.
And the teenager confirmed the vacant spots were a big incentive for the young Quins team to deliver a performance to make others sit up and take notice.
He said: “I think with the internationals away in the autumn there are places up for grabs so a lot of boys are going for them and this is a great opportunity to show how we can perform under pressure.
“It is good to know Conor and Mark [Mapletoft] are here keeping an eye on everyone so I am sure they will be pretty pleased with us.
“It gives you a chance to get your foot in the door and if you do that then it is up to you to take it.
“But it is all about getting that first opportunity and then the rest is up to you.”
