Sutton United chairman Bruce Elliott has insisted the club's directors will not squander its new found wealth as they bid to build a community club the town can be proud of.

The Gander Green Lane side landed a money-spinning second round FA Cup clash with League One Notts County on December 4 after beating Blue Square Premier side Kettering Town 1-0 in Saturday.

United have already pocketed £43,000 in prize money - having progressed from the second qualifying round - and that pot will be swelled by the £72,000 they will get from broadcasters ESPN for screening the game.

Sutton, who have plans on the table to redevelop their home ground, have never had one of their matches televised live to the nation and Elliott admitted it was a dream come true for the club and the town.

Although he insisted he would not let it go to his head.

"It is absolutely unbelievable. Mindblowing. It is reward for everyone who has put so much hard work into this club," he said.

"We like to think we do things properly here and believe you can't spend more than you bring in. We don't owe anyone anything.

"Getting sponsorship has become increasingly difficult, so we have worked very hard on community themed days to try and attract more punters.

"When you have a chairman who is an accountant and a very, very sensible board of directors, this will not be squandered."

Sutton United remain the last non-League team to have beaten top-flight opposition in the FA Cup when goals from Tony Rains and Matt Hanlan saw off First Division Coventry City 2-1 in 1989.

Manager Paul Doswell, who expects a crowd of more than 3,000 for the visit of the Magpies, led the team to the Ryman Premier League title last season and has his men riding high in the Blue Square South.

And Elliott, who saw the club relegated in 2008, had nothing but praise for the man he appointed three years ago and has inspired a dramatic turnaround in the club's fortunes.

"There was a time where we didn't know where the next goal was coming from let alone the next win," he added.

"Since appointing Paul we have reached the first round proper of the FA Cup three times in the last four seasons including this year.

"That is a great achievement even before you think we won the league last year.

"Fans are seeing some of the best football to be played here in the last 30 years.

"The FA Cup generates its own publicity and hopefully a few more football fans in the town will be wandering down to see us."

Some of United's cup pedigree since 1988: 1988/89 - Knocked out then-First Division Coventry City with a 2-1 win in-front of 8,000 fans at Gander Green Lane as they reached the fourth round.

1993/94 - Beat Torquay United and Colchester United on the way to a 3-2 third round defeat at Notts County.

2008 - Reached the FA Cup first round for the first time since 1995, but lost to 1-0 to League Two Notts County at home.

2009 - Again reached the first round, but lost 2-0 at League Two Hereford United.

2011 - Need a replay to get past Ryman Premier League strugglers Leatherhead in the fourth qualifying round to set up Saturday's 1-0 win over Kettering Town.
