James Mulley wants to reclaim his place in AFC Wimbledon's midfield - but is happy biding his time on the wing if he has to.

The 23-year-old was a mainstay in the middle of the park for the Dons last season but has spent the majority of this campaign on the bench after an injury ruled him out of the first month.

With Ricky Wellard, Max Porter, Rashid Yussuff, Lee Minshull and Sammy Moore all ahead of him in the queue for a midfield spot, Mulley has found himself on the wing when he has played, a position he likes but he still yearns for a midfield berth.

"I would love to play in the middle but I just want to play really," said the former Hayes & Yeading man.

"It is difficult and a bit frustrating being on the bench but that is how it is - we have a big squad.

"I have just got to keep working hard and trying to get that start and when I get that start or even when I am coming off the bench I have to try my best to make it hard for the manager to leave me out.

"We have a lot of central midfielders and sometimes it is good to be able to play in other positions, but sometimes, because of that, you don't get to play in position.

"But I just want to play really, wherever it may be."

Mulley was again deployed as a sub on Tuesday night as Wimbledon shocked League One Scunthorpe United 1-0 thanks to Luke Moore's strike, which secured a second round FA Cup trip to Bradford City on December 3.

It was their first win in nine games in all competitions and followed up Saturday's 1-1 draw with Swindon Town when Alan Connell's second-half strike cancelled out Sammy Hatton's early deflected effort.

And Mulley now wants to take the winning feeling from Tuesday into Saturday's trip to Burton Albion.

"The winless run in the league is not really on the players' minds," he said.

"We haven't really thought about it, we are just thinking about the next game and winning it.

"If we keep performing well I am sure we will get the win that we need but we are unbeaten too, we keep drawing a lot of games and we just need to get that winning feeling again."
