Brentford striker Gary Alexander reckons his two months of injury frustration were not so bad, because work puts a smile on his face.

The 32-year-old made his comeback from an ankle problem in the 2-1 home win over Stevenage at Griffin Park last month and has featured in every game since, including Saturday’s 1-0 defeat to league leaders Charlton Athletic.

The former Millwall star’s muscle has been missed by boss Uwe Rosler’s men and the Bees have only lost once in five games since his return.

But Alexander admitted fans would have a little longer to wait until he recaptures his best form.

“I’m getting there. I need games and fitness. The more games and minutes I get, the better I’ll become,” he said.

“I have been in the swimming pool constantly with the fitness team. They have worked their socks off with me. I’ve been in the pool every day and doing cardio and strength work and now it is game time I need to get better and fitter.

“Recovering from an injury is not too hard at the moment, because you go in to the club in a good mood and there is a smile on everyone’s face.

“It is a good place to be at the moment. It is quite easy to go into work.”

Brentford have struggled to get results at home this term, although boss Rosler was delighted with his team’s efforts on Saturday – despite the defeat.

And Alexander is hoping the Bees, who have now played most of the division’s top teams at home, can finally crack the knack of securing maximum points at Griffin Park on a regular basis.

“Teams know how attacking we can be. Teams have come here and shut us out. Hopefully, others will come here and attack.

“But if they don’t, we have to have a plan B to be able to take them on and beat them.”

And the Bees striker felt a repeat of the side’s efforts against Charlton would see them reap the rewards.

“We definitely deserved something and I can’t believe we have lost,” he added.

“If we keep performing like that we will win games.”
