Sutton United are no strangers to FA Cup giantkillings and neither is winger Tony Taggart.

United's conquest of Coventry City in 1989 still ranks as the last time a top flight team fell foul of non-League opposition in the competition, but Taggart at least has an inkling of what that might feel like.

The former Eastleigh, Farnborough, Weymouth and Barnet wide man was part of the Havant & Waterlooville side that twice took the lead against Liverpool at Anfield in 2008 as they lost 5-2 in the fourth round.

Taggart was a first half substitute on Merseyside that day and admits it remains the highlight of his career.

"The Liverpool game is still probably the biggest memory of my football career. Days like that don't come around very often for any footballer, let alone for a non-League player," he said.

"I started on the bench and to come on so early in such a big game, well, it was a dream come true really.

"It was a mad day. To twice take the lead was amazing and to have them genuinely worried for a bit was a great feeling.

"We all managed to swaps shirts with the Liverpool boys and the plan was to auction them off. I got Leiva Lucas's, but we all decided we wanted to keep them for ourselves.

"Some players don't ever experience that so it would be amazing to do it again."

The 30-year-old schools football coach is preparing for Sunday's second round visit of League One Notts County, having had the pleasure of netting the winner against the Magpies at the same stage during that memorable run.

And he is hoping lightning strikes twice against his former manager Martin Allen at the weekend.

"I know Martin Allen well. He signed me from Farnborough when he was at Barnet, so he should remember me," he added.

"There is no way he will not have his team switched on for this.

"They are going to have a bit of quality about them, but there is no pressure on us and if we can keep it 0-0 for as long as possible we will have a chance.

"It would be great if I could do the same as I did the last time we played."

Sutton have not won a game since beating Kettering Town in the last round and were dumped out of the FA Trophy by Blue Sqaure South rivals Basionstoke Town 2-1 on Saturday, despite taking a fifth minute lead.

Town hit the an 86th minute winner through former Hampton & Richmond Borough man Stuart Lake to progress and leave United winless in their last three outings.

Boss Paul Doswell's men will know who awaits them in the third round - should they get there - with the draw for the next round being made prior to Sunday's kick-off.

And Taggart has warned their rivals that could work in Sutton's favour.

He said: "When we beat Swansea City that year, by the time we played the replay we knew we had a trip to Liverpool waiting if we won.

"That is a massive incentive and it is going to be exciting knowing who we will get. It can get you up for a game even more if you know what is at stake, particularly if it is a big team like Manchester United.

"We're having a bit of a blip at the moment, but all good teams have that at some stage.

"We've got a good side, a good manager and good coaches. There is great character in this squad and I'm sure we'll bounce back."
