Football commentator Jon Champion may have covered games involving Premier League bright lights Fulham, Aston Willa and Manchester United this week, but it is his trip to Gander Green Lane that has got the juices flowing.

The 46-year-old, who was at Sutton's training ground on Tuesday night familiarising himself with boss Paul Doswell's squad, will be behind the mic for ESPN when Sutton United take on Notts County in the FA Cup second round on Sunday live on satellite television.

The game will complete a week that will see the former BBC and ITV broadcaster commentating on the Cottagers's trip to FC Twente in the Europa League on Thursday and the Red Devils visit to Villa in the top flight on Saturday.

But the self-confessed York City and lower league football fan insists the FA Cup clash trumps them all.

"For a commentator the FA Cup the best competition in the world because it takes us out of our comfort zones and you get to hear all the stories you otherwise wouldn't hear," said Champion, who is lead commentator for ESPN’s season-long coverage of the FA Cup and Premier League.

"It is a celebration of the inequalities that exist in English football and is a great way of redistributing the wealth that exists within the game.

"Sutton have a rich history in this competition and Notts County are one of the oldest clubs in the world, so it is a fascinating clash.

"The result of this match is going to be difficult to call. It is far from a foregone conclusion.

"County manager Martin Allen will have done his homework and, as a former non-League manager, will be showing Sutton all the respect they deserve."

Champion, who has covered World Cups and FA Cup finals during the course of his career, last visited Gander Green Lane as a rookie reporter 25 years ago and is looking forward to his return.

"I was covering Scarborough at the time and it was the year they became the first non-League team to be automatically promoted to the Football League," he added.

"Sutton was one of their important games during the run in. I doubt the ground hasn't changed much and I'm really looking forward to going back."

Jon Champion is lead commentator on ESPN, broadcaster of the FA Cup. ESPN will be providing live and exclusive coverage from the second round match between Sutton United and Notts County on Sunday from 4.15pm.
