Sutton United chairman Bruce Elliott reckons Sunday’s FA Cup visit of Notts County has sent the club’s profile – not to mention its bank balance – through the roof.

United take on the League One Magpies at Gander Green Lane in the FA Cup second round three years after they last visited Sutton and left with a 1-0 first round win.

Boss Paul Doswell’s side have lifted the Ryman Premier League title since then and are currently riding high in the Blue Square South after a terrific start to the campaign.

The cup run has netted the club £42,500 in prize money and £72,000 in television cash thus far, with a bumper gate on Sunday and sponsorship deals expected to swell the coffers beyond the £150,000 mark.

Sutton stand to win £27,000 if they beat County and could also land a plumb third round tie with the likes of Premier League Manchester United.

And Elliott admitted the club – on and off the pitch – is light years from where it was the last time County were in town.

“We have taken ourselves to another level since 2008, not only in the league but in everything we are doing,” he said.

“We are now playing in the league we want to be and the organisation of the club is beginning to match what is happening on the pitch.

“We have to get our average gates up and this is only going to help with that “This game has been a real opportunity to put ourselves on the map and it is not just people in the town that are taking an interest.

“It has helped that we have a history in the competition and the fact it is going to be on television has really captured everyone’s imagination.

“We can only hope the people that come on the day enjoy themselves and want to come back. If a few of them do that, then this has been a huge success.”

More than 2,000 tickets have been sold in advance of the clash – with some postal applications coming from as far as Leighton Buzzard.

The Sutton United Supporters’ Trust has co-ordinated a major publicity drive in the build up to the game, distributing more than 1,000 leaflets plugging the game and will be selling tickets for the match in Sutton high street tomorrow afternoon.

And Elliott has warned fans not to leave it too late to get their hands on tickets.

“People will be able to pay on the gate on the day, but it makes everyone’s lives easier if tickets are bought in advance,” he said on Tuesday.

“It will mean we won’t have to worry about handling huge amounts of gate money on the day for a start. “We are expecting to sell more, so I would urge anyone thinking of coming to get their ticket as soon as possible.”
