Jamie Stuart is determined to help AFC Wimbledon reach the FA Cup third round for the first time on Saturday - but warned the Dons must rediscover their defensive mean streak if they are to do so, writes James Owens.

Terry Brown's men have only made the second round once in their nine-year history before this season, when they were beaten by Stevenage 12 months ago, but would love to emulate the old Wimbledon who won the competition in 1988.

However, last weekend's 3-2 defeat at Burton Albion marked a return to the defensive frailties that appeared behind them after conceding just four goals in six games and captain Stuart could not hide his frustration.

“We had been doing very well defensively, so to go to Burton and concede three was disappointing,” he said.

“We were a little bit naïve, and it’s something we’ve got to work on.

“But we will try to put Saturday’s performance behind us and go again.

"We’re a confident bunch of lads, the management keep us going and they won’t let us get too disheartened."

Luke Moore scored his second goal in as many games for the Dons before a late own goal sparked false hopes of leaving with a point.

But Stuart's attentions are now turned firmly toward the cup and he admitted earning a place in Sunday’s third round draw with victory at Bradford City would be a huge achievement for the Dons.

“It will be massive if we beat Bradford, and it’s something we want to achieve for everyone involved with the club,” he said.

“With the history of the club, everyone, especially the fans, would be relishing a big draw if we get through. It would be fantastic.”

Terry Brown hopes to have Gareth Gwillim and Christian Jolley available for the all-League Two clash at Valley Parade, with Gwillim having played in Tuesday's 2-1 London Senior Cup win against Wingae & Finchley, in a side that included long-term injury victim Mat Mitchel-King.

And Brown feels an improved defensive display would give the Dons every chance of a repeat of September’s 2-1 league victory in West Yorkshire.

“The game we played there in the league was very tight, and you could toss a coin over who will go through," he said.

“But I’m quite confident that if we can defend better than we did against Burton, we’ve got enough firepower to cause them some problems.”
