Brentford were dumped out of the second round of the FA Cup after turning in a lacklustre performance that saw them lose 1-0 to Wrexham at Griffin Park on Saturday.

The non-league side – top of the Blue Square Premier – were worthy winners against their hosts, who were booed off at full time by the home fans.

Afterwards Bees’ boss Uwe Rosler conceded that his side was lacking, particularly in the first half: “Wrexham wanted it more. I felt when they were in the tunnel they were screaming and shouting and it reminded me of Wimbledon. Maybe they got a psychological boost in the tunnel. They not only wanted it more, they played much better than we did in the first half.”

Wrexham were the better side from the off, dominating the early exchanges, typified by Adrian Cieslewicz, who dribbled past two Bees defenders before firing a low shot wide of the left hand post.

Jay Harris then tried his luck with a speculative effort from outside the box, which sailed over the crossbar.

Against the run of play, Sam Saunders came close to giving Brentford the lead when he was fouled outside the box and Wrexham’s keeper Joslain Mayebi did well to get down to his right and palm Saunders’ low free kick round the post.

The tie was settled by a stunning strike from James Tolley after half an hour, who found the top right hand corner with a half volley from 25 yards out after the Bees had failed to properly clear a corner.

Saunders’ corner from the left was headed over the bar by Leon Legge as the Bees headed into half time with much to ponder.

Rosler made two immediate changes, bringing on Niall McGinn and Manny Oyeleke in an effort to introduce some creativity, but while his side improved during the second half, it never looked like grabbing an equaliser.

After Craig Woodman mis-judged a diagonal pass over his head, Cieslewicz broke down the right and his low shot was just wide of the left hand post.

The Bees’ briefly threatened when Jonathan Douglas set up Gary Alexander, who turned and shot wide, before Alexander again had a decent chance when he headed Shaleum Logan’s cross into Mayebi’s hands.

In the closing minutes McGinn shot wide from outside the box, while Legge headed over the bar from a corner as the Bees crashed out of the FA Cup.
