AFC Wimbledon may have stopped haemorrhaging goals since finding a settled back four, but Mat Mitchel-King is still demanding better.

For the past six games, the 28-year-old has been partnered by Pim Balkestein in the centre of the defence, with Gareth Gwillim at left back and Sam Hatton at right back and the Dons have conceded just six goals.

It may not seem a great record, but considering they let in seven in the three games before that run alone, it is a marked improvement.

And Mitchel-King, who has started the past 16 games having missed the first four months of the campaign with injury, wants to see it bettered further.

“It definitely helps to have a settled back four,” he said.

“But we still have not kept enough clean sheets and have more work to do.

“We need to be more solid as a team, not just the back four, to do something in this league.

“Personally, during the start of the season when I was out I would have been happy playing just 10 games.

“But since I have been back, Mike Raynor keeps tabs on me and I have a programme to keep myself in shape so it is a credit to him.”

Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Accrington Stanley made it seven away games without a win – despite Luke Moore’s first-half equaliser.

The Dons are pushing for the 50 point mark manager Terry Brown believes will guarantee safety and Mitchel-King hopes to finally reach it with a fourth home win in a row against Rotherham United tomorrow – before they go to Southend United on Monday.

“We are trying to get to that target as quickly as possible and that is what we are striving for on Friday,” he added.

“Our home form has been a lot better and we finally got a clean sheet at home.

“We have looked like showing glimpses of our early season form and if we can now build on these home performances we can take it into next season.”
