AFC Wimbeldon put a dent in Torquay United’s automatic promotion hopes with a 2-0 win at Kingsmeadow.
Late goals from substitute Rashid Yussuff – only in the squad because of injury to Jack Turner in the warm up – and George Moncur gave the Dons the first win in five and left Torquay level on points with third-placed Crawley Town.
It was far from a vintage performance by the Dons but they frustrated their promotion-chasing visitors and were good value for their win despite a lack of clear cut chances prior to the goals.
The opening 35 minutes barely saw either keeper make a touch but captain Jamie Stuart denied Torquay with a last ditch tackle and Rene Howe flashed a shot across goal.
The Dons then gifted the Gulls the perfect chance to open the scoring as Stuart left a throughball for Seb Brown and Ian Morris nipped in only to shoot straight at the keeper when he really had to score.
Robert Olejnik denied Christian Jolley when he was through on goal and easily claimed Luke Moore’s shot from distance before the break.
The second half continued in the same vein as both sides tried to find a breakthrough but the final ball was too often lacking.
Jolley did force a save from Olejnik, Howe headed over and Sam Hatton had an indirect free-kick in the box blocked before Wimbledon eventually found the net with 10 minutes left.
Hatton got to the by-line and laid the ball back to Yussuff, on for Billy Knott, on the edge of the box and he calmly slid the ball into the bottom corner in the pouring rain.
Moncur then made the game safe five minutes later when Chris Bush surged down the left and the crossed for Luke Moore to set up the West Ham loanee to curl into the corner.
The win took the Dons past their 50 point target with two games left of their debut Football League season.
