Harlequins RL loose forward Rob Purdham has described leading England to victory over France as the highlight of his career.

The 26-year-old captained his side to a 26-10 victory in the Federation Shield opener at Headingley on Sunday.

And Purdham is set to repeat the feat on his home turf when they face Tonga, who are expected to include Quins second row Solomon Haumono and centre Tyrone Smith, in Twickenham this weekend.

Dewsbury-born Purdham will be surrounded by familiar faces on and off the pitch, with Tongan coach and ex-London Bronco Jim Dymock making a return to his former club.

Purdham is keen to make an impression for the home fans and lead his side to Federation Shield glory on November 19.

"It was a big thrill to captain the side and ranks as the biggest achievement in terms of my career," said Purdham (above) after Saturday's win, which came thanks to Wigan winger Mark Calderwood's brace.

"I was a bit surprised to be chosen as captain but it was a real honour. Now we want to win all four games to lift the trophy.

"It is going to be good playing against a couple of people I know and I would really like to smash the pair of them."

Purdham has the full backing of England coach Paul Cullen to make a decisive impact alongside experienced vice-captain Matt Diskin.

Cullen named Purdham as skipper for all three Shield matches, plus the final should they make it, adding: "Rob is captain of his club side and has the respect of his peers."

Tonga and Samoa, the other participating nations, are making their first visits to these shores since the 2000 World Cup.
