Tooting & Mitcham boss Jamie Martin is keeping his, and his players’, feet firmly on the ground despite winning their first home game of the Ryman League Division One South season.
Two goals from Taurean Roberts and a Jordan Wilson strike sank visitors Corinthian Casuals 3-0 at Imperial Fields, and lifted the Terrors to 16th in the table – two weeks’ ago they were second from bottom.
They host high-flying Crawley Down Gatwick this weekend, with Martin, who signed former Hampton & Richmond Borough midfielder Francis Quarm and Herne Bay striker George Landais last week, confident of a result on the back of four games unbeaten.
Martin said: “We’ve turned things quickly, even quicker than I imagined and credit must go to the players.
“But they know me and I will not have them thinking they know it all after a few good results. If I see anyone taking their foot off the pedal, be it in the first or last five minutes of a game, I’ll whip them off the field. I will not have it.”
He added: “Crawley are going well but they have lost three games in a row, so they are on the way down whereas we are on the way up.
“Getting that home win is a monkey off our backs, but I think the fans felt the pressure more than the players.”
Martin organised a friendly with Carshalton Athletic for Tuesday night with the intention of running the rule over more possible recruits.
He said: “I always want to strengthen the team, we need a good, deep squad to build on the success we’re beginning to have.”
