Former Sutton United striker Kyle Vassell may be back in League One and targeting promotion to the Championship, but he has not forgotten those who helped him get there.
After leaving Gander Green Lane in December last year, Vassell went to Chelmsford and then to Bishop’s Stortford, where his 16 goals this season landed him a move to Peterborough United in November.
The 20-year-old has since made one start for his new club, which happened to be a full 90 minutes in the Posh’s 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of November.
He would like to follow in the footsteps of ex-Posh striker Dwight Gayle, who now plays for Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
And promotion with high-flying Peterborough is all that interests him.
“I’m looking to get my head down and hopefully produce the same sort of form that got me my move,” he said.
“It could take me two weeks or two years to get used to being here, you never know in football.
“Promotion is what I’m all about. I’m all about winning things. I could not be at a struggling team.”
Vassell scored 13 goals in 38 appearances for Sutton United in the Conference South after not being offered a professional deal at Brentford.
A lack of regular football forced him to leave the Lane and the former construction supervisor has since proved he was right to trust his instincts. “The reason I left Sutton was nothing to do with the club.
It is a great club with the great people.
“I love it at Sutton, but I just felt I needed to play more football. “The manager could not guarantee me regular football, so I decided to leave.”
He added: “Me and Dos still talk. There are a few teams I still watch out for – obviously, I’ve got a few on my CV.
“I still speak to most of the boys down there, and everyone from there got in touch to congratulate me when I got my move to Peterborough.
“The club is still very close to me and they are flying along at the moment.”
On the pitch, United were undone 2-1 at home to Tonbridge Angels, dropping to fourth in the Skrill South table in the process.
Charlie Clough had United ahead before the Angels came back.
United go to Ebbsfleet United on Saturday.
