A fourth 1-0 home defeat of the season was greeted with more depressed sighs than angry boos on Saturday as Kingstonian’s alarming form continues.
This time it was Enfield Town who departed Kingsmeadow with all three Ryman Premier League points, with Ks mustering only one shot on target all afternoon.
Manager Tommy Williams, who is having to cope with the loss of Andre McCollin to Aldershot, admitted that things are going badly wrong at present.
“We were second best,” he said. “I thought we got overrun in midfield. We looked like we hadn’t played for a while and it was nowhere near good enough – again.
“I’m working tirelessly on it, 24/7, to get it right and we will get it right. Today is a day to forget. We chased it at the end but it’s another similar performance and, I think, a bit gutless.”
Although it took supporter-owned Enfield until the 81st minute to take the lead - Mark Kirby with the strike through a crowd of players after a corner - they were well worth their advantage, having dominated possession throughout.
Drawing a blank: No goals for Pelayo Pico Gomez on Saturday
Pelayo Pico Gomez, leading the Ks attack in an unusual 4-3-3, had the home team’s one chance of note but failed to convert a first-half one-on-one.
Williams is plainly seeking a new style and system. Half of this Ks team propelled the club to a second-placed finish last season.
While the defence remains solid, success in 2013/14 was largely down to the 60 goals provided by McCollin and Ryan Moss (now at Margate).
Their pace and penetration simply hasn’t been replaced. Coupled with a midfield struck by collective lassitude, the result is a regression to the mid-table struggles of the 2011/12 and 2012/13 seasons.
“I know I’m new to Ks as a manager, and I know everybody’s got high expectations, " added Williams. "We’re a work in progress, we are trying to find the right formula.”
The defeat leaves Ks 10 points off the play-off places ahead of a derby at Dulwich Hamlet next Saturday.
