Liverpool's FA Cup fourth round replay exit to West Ham United on Tuesday will have struck a chord with Kingstonian fans this week.
Angelo Ogbonna’s late winner in extra-time stoppage time came just days after the anniversary of Ks’ cup exit at the same stage 15 years ago.
Legendary boss Geoff Chapple set Kingstonian a target of 45 points for Conference safety after their 1-0 replay defeat to Bristol City in 2001.
Back then: Ks striker Tony Reid celebrates lifting the Surrey Senior Cup with a 1-0 win over AFC Wimbledon in 2006
Ks, who beat Devizes Town, Brentford, Southport and Southend on their way to the fourth round, had been seconds from a plum fifth round trip to Leicester City, having led the first game 1-0 only to concede an equaliser in the sixth minute of injury time.
Chapple’s men were pipped 1-0 in the replay at Kingsmeadow as Scott Murray hit City's 88th minute winner.
Ks pocketed more than £150,000 from the cup run, but dropped out of the Conference after losing 11 of their remaining 20 league games.
D-Day: Ivor Hellor, centre, celebrates the moment Dons fans discover they will be returning to Merton
A lot has happened since then.
By 2003, the leasehold for Kingsmeadow had been sold to newly formed AFC Wimbledon, and Ks were relegated to Ryman Division One South two years later.
The club are set to be made homeless once the Dons rubber stamp the agreed sale of the ground to Premier League Chelsea to build a new home in Merton.
Great day: Martin Tyler, Alan Dowson and Mark Hams celebrate claiming the Ryman Division One South title in 2009
High points on the pitch in that time have included a Surrey Senior Cup triumph over the club’s new landlords in 2006 and claiming the Division One South title under Alan Dowson in 2009.
Ks are one point outside of the Ryman Premier League play-offs with 16 games to go.
National League South football cannot come soon enough.
