Kingstonian boss Tommy Williams wanted a reaction from his players after back-to-back defeats, and he certainly got one.
Ks’ Ryman Premier Division play-off push had faltered following a 2-1 defeat at Canvey Island and a 4-0 hammering at Enfield.
However, goals from Pelayo Pico-Gomez, Andre McCollin, Alan Inns and Dan Bennett secured an unexpected 4-1 win over leaders Hampton & Richmond on Saturday.
The Bank Holiday trip to Farnborough fell foul of the weather, much to Williams’ dismay, leaving Ks sixth in the table, three points off the play-offs, but with a game in hand.
The boss said: “The conditions on Saturday were very tough, and we had the wind against us in the first half, so to come in at 2-1 was important.
“We had the wind behind us after the break and we took full advantage.
“We put Lee O’Leary back into the middle to help deal with Hampton’s aerial threat and it seemed to work – but we were all warriors out there.”
He added: “I wanted a reaction because we were bitterly disappointed after the Enfield game, and now we need the strength, determination and commitment that we showed on Saturday for the rest of the season because we have a very busy schedule coming up.
“Having said that, I was disappointed that Monday’s game was called off because we wanted to keep the momentum of the Hampton performance.
“But on the flip-side, it does give us a week’s break to get some tired muscles rested ahead of the run-in.”
That run-in brings strugglers Lewes to Kingsmeadow on Saturday, ahead of the visit of Bognor Regis Town on Monday and the small matter of the Alan Turvey Trophy final against Faversham Town on Wednesday.
Williams, who is now without the suspended Harold Odametey for two games, said: “Lewes are a young side and they are fighting for their lives at the bottom, and they will continue to do that until the end of the season.
“We know we need to be spot on if we’re to get a result.”
