Carshalton Athletic became the latest victim to fall under the unrelenting Folkestone Invicta juggernaut last Saturday.
The Robins arrived at the home of the Ryman Division One South champions with 10 points from their past five games but, despite a spirited display in miserable playing conditions, they left Kent off the back of a 3-1 defeat.
However, striker Michael Campbell felt the final result, which leaves Carshalton 11th in the table and Folkestone on 108 points, did not tell the whole story.
“I don’t think it was a reflective scoreline as their third came with the last kick of the game,” said Campbell.
“They punished a couple of small mistakes in the first-half, but we played some good football and created enough chances to leave with at least a point.”
It was Campbell whom grabbed Carshalton’s first-half goal with a cracking 18-yard half volley to end a personal drought of seven games without one.
“It was a relief to score as it had been weighing on my mind. [Team-mate] Matt Males told me I’d probably score the hardest chance that came my way and he wasn’t wrong,” he said.
Carshalton’s penultimate game of the season is a visit to Herne Bay and Campbell believes he and his team-mates should go there full of confidence.
“One thing I’ve enjoyed since re-joining the club [Campbell re-signed for Carshalton in February from Staines Town] is the way we stick to playing to our strengths no matter the opposition,” he added.
“We’ve been playing well lately so, if we cut out the small mistakes and start taking our chances, we can get a win down there no doubt.”
