Christian Jolley signed for Hampton & Richmond Borough because he knows boss Alan Dowson will not be happy with his side simply making up the numbers in National League South.
The 28-year-old, who started his career under Dowson at Kingstonian signed for the Beavers last week, having helped AFC Wimbledon and Newport County in to the Football League.
And Jolley is eyeing a promotion challenge in his first season at the Beveree.
“This is such an exciting time for the club and I want to be a part of it," he told the club website.
"I want to play in another side who tastes promotion – there is no better feeling, as the boys here will tell you. I can’t wait to meet them and get to work.”
He added: "If you know the manager you will know he wouldn’t ever going into any league just to make up the numbers.
“I know enough about this league to say that any team with a work ethic - a club who has passionate players - are going to do alright.
“I’m excited about what could be ahead. The challenge is there to make the team be noticed in the higher division.”
