Middlesex Ladies won a competitive game 2 - 0 over Surrey on a very heavy pitch at Redhill FC on Wednesday evening.
Kelly Townsend (Enfield Town), making her 21st appearance for the County, put the Ladies ahead after 17 minutes and Davina Smith (Barnet) scored a very opportune goal on the stroke of half time.
Surrey fought back strongly in the second half but, thanks to a goal line clearance by Vicky Elcombe (Barnet) and a solid goalkeeping performance by Cherie Rowlands (Barnet), they held firm.
This was a very good start for manager John Abbott taking over from John Jones, who had previously managed the team since its first match almost 10 years ago on 10th March 1998.
The team's complete record under John Jones was played 38, won 22, drawn 4, lost 12 (including 1 on a penalty shoot out), goals scored 118, goals conceded 68.
Beth Demery (Enfield Town) was awarded her County cap after the game in recognition of her 7th appearance for Middlesex.
Victory moved the Ladies, who are the current holders, into second place in the table.
