Tonbridge Angels 1 Carshalton Athletic 3

A three-goal blitz in the first 20 minutes ensured a safe passage for the Robins to the quarterfinal of the League Cup, where they will meet Walton Casuals at home next Tuesday.

Despite the absence of Harwood, Ursell and Quinton, the Robins put on a workmanlike display and rarely looked like conceding the lead achieved by their bright display in the early stages.

Carshalton took the lead on six minutes when Angel's defender Phil Starkey presented the ball to Michael Johnson on the left and the midfielder's cross picked out Dwayne Plummer who had the simple task of bundling the ball past keeper Matt Reed.

Johnson repeated the trick on fifteen minutes when he intercepted Starkey's attempted clearance and his pass to Plummer ended with the Robins striker being bundled over by the keeper as he lined up to shoot.

Phil Ruggles made the most of his chance to add to his goal tally and his penalty wrong-footed Reed to double the lead.

The game was as good as over on twenty minutes when a corner by Evans was headed on by a defender to David Graves and the Carshalton captain's first time drive took a deflection to leave Reed stranded and the ball in the back of the net.

Tonbridge slowly worked their way into the game and Fraser Logan began to cause problems with some good runs down the left, but his crosses mostly ended in the hands of Aaron Howe.

When a ball came in from the right John Cade finally had a chance for a strike on goal, but his shot was dragged wide.

Although the Angel's were enjoying more possession by this time, they rarely looked like breaking down the Robins defence with Graves and Carpenter continuing their recent run of good form.

Late in the half the Robins threatened again when the Tonbridge defence retreated as Zak Graham advanced through the middle and Reed did well to tip over his fierce shot.

Tonbridge needed an early goal in the second period to have any chance of getting back into the game and the Robins defence worked hard to deny them any serious opportunities.

Without creating the chances of the first half, the Robins continued to try to pass their way out of trouble even after the defence was reshuffled when Watts came on to replace Lewis Gonsalves who had picked up a minor injury.

Kirk Watts was finding space on the right for Tonbridge as the Robins tired and his efforts were rewarded when his low cross was knocked in by Tommy Tyne with 15 minutes remaining. Tonbridge were unable, however, to apply any sustained pressure and it was the Robins who had the easiest chance to score in the late stages when Plummer's break ended with a ball to Johnson.

With only the keeper to beat, Johnson disappointingly hit his shot wide of the upright.

Tommy Chaplin came on to replace Graham for the last few minutes, but there were no further alarms and the Robins cruised through to the last eight.
