Two demonstrations of clinical finishing from Richard Jolly, either side of a Charlie Ide goal, ensured that the home team enjoyed a comfortable win against their Ryman League North opponents.
Redbridge worked hard, but rarely managed to trouble a Robins defence that is growing in confidence as the season approaches.
Charlie Ide was in the thick of the action early on, beating the visitor’s offside trap as he broke down the right.
The Robins should have taken the lead on 12 minutes, but the Robins striker chose to shoot instead of passing to Matt Gray who was unmarked to his right.
Lewis Gonsalves was denied a goal when he took a cross from Scott Cousins in his stride only to see Redbridge keeper Dave McCartney touch the ball wide at full stretch.
Ide was marginally offside from Richard Jolly’s pass, but on 35 minutes Jolly showed how it should be done, as he made the most of Matt Gray’s pass to steer the ball home as the Redbridge defenders converged on him. Not long after Charlie Ide doubled the lead with a similar goal from Bashir Alimi’s through ball.
Redbridge came back into the game early in the second period and Ellie Kayumbe figured in most of Redbridge’s attacks with his powerful running and strength on the ball as Carshalton were forced back into their half.
The storm was weathered with few serious problems and 15 minutes into the second half Carshalton went three up when Ide combined well with his strike partner and Richard Jolly raced through for his second goal of the game.
Both sides made changes at this point. The Robins brought on midfielder Wes Daly for his first appearance in a Carshalton shirt and out of the dug-out and on to the field came Robins favourite Jack MacLeod to give a reminder of his ability to light up any game.
Somewhat surprisingly it was Redbridge who managed to score the final goal of the game as a reward for their efforts, but it was thanks to a dubious penalty against Gonsalves for what was judged to be a foul on Kayumbe resulting in the striker going to ground some time after the Robins defender’s ball-winning tackle.
But you take what you get in this game and Ayumbe’s spot kick went in off the post. Sawyer and Ide kept the pressure on the visitors defence and the final chance fell to Ide, but he blazed his shot just over at the end of another fine run.
Carshalton squad; Mark Reed, David Graves, Scott Cousins, Liam Harwood, Lewis Gonsalves, Adrian Toppin, Matt Gray, Bashir Alimi, Charlie Ide, Richard Jolly, Dean Carpenter, Frankie Sawyer, Simon Cooper, Wes Daly, Jack MacLeod"
