Billy Smith is urging his Tooting & Mitcham side to write their name in the club’s history after the Terrors moved within two games of an FA Cup first round berth.

Saturday’s impressive 2-0 win at Ryman Premier rivals Canvey Island booked Tooting’s place in the Third Qualifying round, where they were handed the favourable draw of Slough Town at home.

And Smith admitted he is dreaming of guiding the Terrors to the first round for the first time since 1977.

He said: “That is a massive carrot for us now, especially after the draw.

“A lot of very good sides are still left in the competition, so for us to get a home tie against a team from a lower league (Slough play in the Zamaretto League Midlands Division) is a real bonus.

“We will not get carried away as our home form has not been the greatest this season but we have a great chance of making progress.”

Jamie Byatt and Paul Vines grabbed the goals as Tooting strolled to victory in Essex at the weekend.

And Smith insisted his side had been deserving winners.

He added: “We played very well and I don’t think 2-0 showed how dominant we were.

“It was only after the game I realised they were in second place in our league so to go there and do that is a great result.

“We defended well and everybody pulled their weight and when they do that we look a good side.”

Tooting return to league action this weekend when they host Tonbridge Angels and Smith is expecting a typically tough encounter.

He added: “They are a tough side to play against and are rightly one of the favourites to go up.

“But every game in this league is tough and we will be ready for them.”
