Hampton & Richmond Borough boss Alan Devonshire has hailed skipper Dean Wells as the reason behind his side’s stunning FA Cup triumph over Braintree Town this week.
The former Brentford trainee helped the Beavers to a 0-0 draw in Essex - his side’s first cleansheet of the season - before inspiring them to a 4-1 replay win at the Beveree on Tuesday night.
Wells has been bothered by injury and suspension in the opening weeks of the campaign, which almost saw Hampton go an entire month without a win and slip to 14th in the Blue Square South table.
But his and John Scarborough’s return to full match fitness has sparked a three match unbeaten run to reignite hopes of making a third successive play-off challenge this season.
“The boys have had a few injuries and this week has probably been the first time Deano has been fully fit,” he said.
“He is an important player for us and makes a big difference at the back. The fact him and Scarbs are now playing regularly should help us massively.
“I was absolutley delighted with the performances against Braintee Town. We were excellent, I can’t say any more than that really.
“The win was the best we have played at home this season, but we have got to build on it now.
“Two wins from our next two games will see us right back up in the mix instead of looking over our shoulders.”
Goals from Marcello Fernandes, Craig Dundas, Lawrence Yaku and Barrie Matthews secured safe passage to the FA Cup third qualifying round and a home tie withRyman League Premier Division Aveley.
And Devonshire, who is not yet dreaming of the first round proper, insists his side can not afford to take eith lower league side lightly.
“On paper it looks like we should go through, but it never works out that way. We have to give them every respect or we will come unstuck,” he added.
“We’ ve just got through a hard draw and we have to expect the same again.”
Striker Ian Hodges is expected to be available for the weekend’s visit of Weymouth.
Hampton’s next three games: Oct 3 Weymouth (h), 10 Aveley or Burnham (FAC, h), 17 Worcester City (h).
